IP or tightness tests

IP (Ingress Protection) testing consists of sealing tests that verify a product’s resistance to the intrusion of solids and liquids. In other words: water and dust protection tests using a series of specific ratings, carried out according to international IP classification standards.

A fundamental type of test that we carry out with expertise at INFINITIA. These IP tests for electronic and industrial products allow us to guarantee that our clients’ products are resistant and safe in environments exposed to water, dust and other particles, and therefore reliable for the end user.

We comply with sealing standards across different industries. In our laboratory, we carry out various water- and dust-resistance tests on products and materials to verify their level of IP protection . Find out all the details of our IP or watertightness testing service.

What is waterproofing testing?

What is it?

IP or tightness tests

We verify products’ resistance to liquid ingress. We guarantee safe use in humid environments or those exposed to water. Waterproofing tests for products are key so that products can withstand rain, immersion and cleaning conditions without suffering damage or a decline in their functionality.

These tests include simulations that reproduce different degrees of exposure to water, from splashes to full immersion, validating that the product is prepared to face these environments without risk. IP waterproof certification is especially important for products used outdoors, in industrial facilities, and in electronic devices exposed to the elements.

Advantages of carrying out IP and watertightness testing with INFINITIA

benefits

We are specialized professionals. We back the watertightness and IP protection certification of our clients’ products. Here are the benefits of choosing our IP protection testing services for products:

  • Thorough, tailored evaluation
We carry out custom testing and setup designs for each IP protection level. Our goal is a product that meets the specified waterproofing and dust-resistance requirements.
  • Safety and reliability in demanding environments
Safety is also our concern at INFINITIA. These watertightness tests in product development help us validate their safety, so the product can be used in environments with water and dust, protecting internal components and ensuring its durability.
  • Detection of possible failures during product development phases
Thanks to our testing for obtaining IP waterproof certification, we develop products with greater effectiveness and efficiency, avoiding future problems once they reach the market.
  • Root cause failure analysis
We specialize in forensic engineering, which allows us to analyze failures with complete rigor, including in IP testing. We determine why a product has failed in order to prevent it or establish liability among the affected parties.

Types of IP testing in product development

types

We validate that each component meets the required protection levels, maximizing its durability and functionality under demanding conditions. Types of IP testing cover various water- and dust-protection tests, classified by two digits indicating the level of resistance to solid particles and liquids. This type of testing is essential for manufacturers. It lets them know the level of protection their product offers and obtain the corresponding IP certification for each application.

At INFINITIA’s laboratory, we carry out specific tests for each IP classification level, with the aim of creating products capable of withstanding their intended conditions of use.

Dust protection (first digit)

Here we explain the first types of IP testing for products and what each classification means:

  • IP0X: No specific protection against dust.
  • IP1X to IP4X: Protection against solid objects of various sizes, such as tools or large particles.
  • IP5X: Limited protection against dust; a minimal amount may enter, but it does not affect the product’s operation.
  • IP6X: Completely dust-tight, offering total protection to prevent the entry of solid particles.
Water- and dust-resistance testing

We assess how a product responds to conditions involving exposure to liquids and solid particles. To do this, INFINITIA’s laboratory applies a series of dust- and water-resistance tests that simulate real-world usage situations, ensuring that products are protected and their operation is not affected by the ingress of water or particles.

We validate that the product meets the specified protection levels so that it is suited to the most demanding environments without risk of failure. We carry out water- and dust-protection tests at different intensities, from light exposure to immersion and spray simulations.

Water protection (second digit)

Within IP testing, we distinguish the following types of waterproofing tests for products:

  • IPX0: No specific protection against water.
  • IPX1 to IPX2: Protection against water drops at different angles.
  • IPX3 to IPX4: Protection against water jets from different directions; ideal for products exposed to splashing.
  • IPX5: Protection against low-pressure water jets; water must not affect operation.
  • IPX6: Protection against powerful water jets; ideal for products that may be exposed to heavy rain or hose-directed cleaning.
  • IPX7: Resistance to temporary immersion in water, up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.
  • IPX8: Resistance to prolonged immersion in water, according to conditions specified by the manufacturer (depth and time).
The importance of watertightness testing in product development

Watertightness testing in product development is essential to confirm that each component meets waterproofing standards. At INFINITIA, we carry out IP protection testing for products that assesses the design’s ability to prevent the entry of water and dust. This type of testing makes it possible to detect vulnerable areas and make the necessary design adjustments before the production phase.

In addition, IP testing for electronic products is essential to ensure these devices are safe and functional in the presence of moisture or particles, protecting internal circuits and preventing failures or short circuits. This verification phase makes it possible to ensure the product’s reliability, maximizing its performance and service life under adverse conditions.

IP certification for industrial and electronic products is, in turn, an essential requirement in sectors where exposure to water and dust is frequent. At INFINITIA, we offer watertightness and IP protection certification services that make it possible to validate that each product meets the required protection levels. In this way, we certify products’ resistance to demanding environmental conditions.

We guarantee that end customers receive high-quality products that are safe to use in high-risk environments. This certification process is essential for accessing regulated markets and meeting the protection requirements of each industry.

Sectors where IP testing helps anticipate in-service failures

Sectors

Watertightness testing is relevant across any industry that integrates electronics, mechanisms or fluids in uncontrolled environments. The functional requirement is common — preventing the intrusion of water and solids — but the exposure conditions, the required IP ratings and the consequences of failure vary radically between a vehicle sensor, an active implant and a photovoltaic inverter enclosure.

INFINITIA adapts its approach to each sector based on the applicable regulatory requirements and the dominant failure mode. The test setup, the acceptance criterion and the depth of subsequent diagnosis are tailored to the product’s risk profile, not to a standard protocol applied indiscriminately.
