Photorealistic product renderings based on a CAD model
A photorealistic product rendering is a computer-generated representation of a three-dimensional model, created by applying physical optical properties (roughness, refractive index, reflectance, translucency) and simulated lighting, so that the resulting image accurately depicts how the manufactured part would look. It is generated from the native CAD file (SolidWorks, CATIA, STEP), ensuring that edges, fillet radii, wall thicknesses and parting lines are accurate. Common materials depicted include filled thermoplastics, anodised aluminium, stainless steel with varying degrees of polish, elastomers and technical coatings.
This application allows you to decide on the finish, colour, texture and overall appearance of the product before committing to tooling. Comparing an engraved texture with a shot-blasted one, or an anodised finish with a powder-coated one, no longer requires physical samples of each variant. INFINITIA, as an external technical partner, brings a perspective that a graphics supplier does not have: it knows whether the finish depicted can be produced using the planned process and whether its unit cost is compatible with the project’s objectives.
Photorealistic rendering based on actual CAD geometry transforms the decision on surface finishes – traditionally made using physical samples and taking weeks – into a direct comparison with the final part. When the image is derived from the model rather than a recreation, what is approved is exactly what is manufactured.
Exploded views and technical exploded diagrams of assemblies
An exploded view is a representation of an assembly with its components separated along their assembly axes, whilst maintaining the actual spatial relationships and the order of assembly. It is generated from the model’s assembly tree, without manually repositioning parts, which ensures that the sequence shown is the only possible sequence. Each component is numbered and linked to the bill of materials, incorporating the reference, designation and quantity in accordance with the document identification principles of ISO 7200.
The exploded view enables decisions to be made regarding assembly, procurement and maintenance without access to the physical product. The production line operator identifies the correct sequence; the after-sales technician locates the exact spare part; and the procurement department verifies which part number corresponds to which component. INFINITIA creates these exploded views by incorporating the project’s manufacturing knowledge: which joints are irreversible, which component determines the assembly sequence, and which sub-assembly is supplied pre-assembled.
A properly constructed technical exploded view is the permanent answer to the question ‘what is this part and where does it go?’. It reduces assembly errors on the production line, speeds up the identification of spare parts and maintains product documentation throughout its entire service life, long after the engineering project has been completed.
Infographics on usage, assembly and maintenance procedures
The sequence-of-use infographic breaks down the operation or assembly of a product into discrete steps represented graphically, showing the state of the mechanism at each stage and the labels required to identify the component in action. It applies to mechanisms involving movement (latches, dispensers, actuation systems), to assembly operations with a critical sequence, and to maintenance routines where performing a step in the wrong order will damage the component. The structure of this information follows the criteria set out in IEC/IEEE 82079-1 on the preparation of operating instructions.
This application enables you to determine whether the product can be understood without face-to-face instruction, which is a crucial factor for products that are distributed or installed outside the manufacturer’s control. It also enables the identification, prior to launch, of sequences that only make sense to the person who designed the component. INFINITIA provides an analysis of the actual mechanism (what moves, what it rests against, what play there is) to ensure that every step depicted is physically correct.
When an assembly sequence is illustrated step by step on the actual geometry, the number of enquiries to technical support falls and the scope for incorrect handling is reduced. The sequence animation does not merely describe the intended use: it makes it clear.
Previewing materials, finishes and textures before production
Material visualisation involves representing the actual optical behaviour of each candidate material and surface treatment on the product model, enabling them to be compared directly under identical lighting and framing conditions. The process focuses on measurable properties: specular gloss, surface roughness, the translucency of polymers, and the behaviour of metallic coatings under grazing light. Typical examples include plastic parts with visible flow lines, metallic surfaces with varying degrees of finish, and assemblies where materials with different ageing characteristics coexist.
This application allows you to rule out unfeasible combinations before ordering tooling or samples. Identifying from an image that two adjacent parts from different suppliers will not match in colour, or that a glossy finish will highlight surface defects that are an inevitable part of the process, helps to avoid late-stage redesigns. When the product exists physically but there is no digital model, the computer-generated image is created by digitising the actual part.
