User studies
At INFINITIA we know that user satisfaction and experience are essential to your product’s success. That’s why user studies are fundamental during the product development phase.
In our laboratory we analyze the needs and behaviors of the end user, optimizing not only the product’s functionality, but also its appeal and market acceptance. Trust us to launch your product to market with confidence and success.

What are user studies?
What is it?

A user study is a technical research process that analyzes the needs, capabilities, limitations and behaviors of the people who use a product, with the goal of translating that information into verifiable design specifications. It is not an opinion survey: it is about obtaining evidence on how a product is handled, interpreted and maintained in its real context of use.
Product usability analysis studies measurable variables, not subjective impressions: time to complete each task, number and type of usage errors, forces and torques needed to operate a mechanism, required reach and posture, indicator legibility, assembly and disassembly sequences, and the degree of comprehension of the information provided. This data feeds directly into defining product requirements and specifications and shapes the decisions made during the design and innovation phases.
INFINITIA approaches these studies as an industrial technical consultant, not as an external observer of the design process. The difference matters: the information gathered is interpreted with engineering judgment, taking into account materials, manufacturing processes, tolerances and cost, so that every usage finding becomes a technically executable modification rather than a generic recommendation.
User studies at INFINITIA. From real behavior to technical specification
The technical value of a user study lies in its ability to generate requirements, not descriptions. INFINITIA approaches every project with a decision objective defined from the outset: which product parameter must be fixed, which design alternative must be ruled out, or which usage risk must be mitigated. This approach defines the study’s scope and avoids gathering information that doesn’t change any engineering decision.
The methodology combines qualitative and quantitative techniques depending on the project’s maturity. In early phases, in-context observation, hierarchical task analysis and technical interviews with operators, maintenance technicians or clinical staff are applied. In advanced phases, usability testing is carried out on physical models, recording times, errors, forces and postures, supported by the prototyping of the parts or assemblies where the critical interaction takes place.
The complementarity between observation, testing and technical interpretation is what turns the study into a decision-making tool. A usage finding is checked against manufacturing constraints and the component’s mechanical behavior before proposing a modification. When the goal is to validate the complete functional proposal under representative conditions, the study is built around a minimum viable prototype, allowing usage hypotheses and industrial feasibility to be tested within the same cycle.
INFINITIA’s differentiator lies in integrating analytical rigor with an industrial outlook. The specialized team interprets user behavior with the same criteria it applies to analyzing a material failure: identifying causes, prioritizing factors and proposing verifiable measures. Experience accumulated across development, characterization and failure analysis projects in regulated sectors makes it possible to anticipate which usage deviations lead to real incidents and which are irrelevant to the product’s behavior.
Benefits of user studies for product reliability
benefits
User studies reduce the risk of in-service failure by identifying usage patterns the design team hadn’t anticipated. A mechanism operated with more force than expected, a component disassembled in a different order than documented, or an interface that leads to a misreading, all generate stresses that no structural calculation accounts for. Detecting these deviations before validation makes it possible to size the product against real use rather than theoretical use.
Early definition of user requirements reduces the total cost of development. Every modification introduced after the tooling phase multiplies its cost compared to the same modification applied at the concept stage. By fixing actuation, reach, visibility and maintenance constraints from the outset, mold iterations, material changes and line adjustments that jeopardize both budget and launch schedule are avoided.
User studies reinforce documentary traceability in regulated sectors. In healthcare products and machinery subject to CE marking, evidence about intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse forms part of the technical file and shapes risk assessment. This information connects directly with failure analysis, since a large share of recurring field failures originate from use that differs from what was declared.
User experience (UX) evaluation applied to industrial products improves perceived reliability and reduces returns for non-technical reasons. A product that meets its specifications but requires excessive effort, a long learning curve or uncomfortable maintenance generates complaints that get logged as defects even though the component works correctly. Identifying and fixing these friction points reduces the after-sales burden and stabilizes quality indicators.

Applications of user studies for verified product design
Applications
User studies are applied throughout the entire development cycle, from conceptual definition to pre-industrialization validation. Their broad relevance stems from the fact that user-product interaction simultaneously affects safety, reliability, manufacturing cost and maintenance cost. A single finding can change a geometry, a tolerance, a material or the content of the instructions for use.
INFINITIA adapts the depth of the study to the product’s risk level and the project’s phase. In low functional-risk products, priority is given to characterizing the context of use and validating concepts. In products subject to regulation or with serious consequences arising from a usage error, the study is structured as a documented process, with acceptance criteria defined in advance and traceability between each observation, the resulting requirement and the implemented solution.
Sectors where user studies help anticipate usage errors
Sectors
User studies add value in any sector where the interaction between a person and a product affects safety, reliability or operating cost. The nature of that interaction varies substantially: a device handled by clinical staff in an emergency situation doesn’t pose the same demands as a machine operated across full shifts by trained personnel. The methodology is common; the acceptance criteria and the variables measured are specific to each environment.
INFINITIA adapts the study’s design to the regulatory framework and operating conditions of each sector. This adaptation affects the selection of the participant profile, the usage scenarios evaluated, the variables recorded and the level of documentation required. Experience accumulated across product development, material characterization and failure analysis projects in regulated industries makes it possible to establish acceptance criteria consistent with each sector’s real requirements.
User studies at INFINITIA for deciding with technical evidence
Value
User studies bring an industrial project something no simulation can provide: the actual behavior of the person using the product. That information determines real stresses, foreseeable failure modes and design requirements that would otherwise be established by analogy or assumption. Incorporating it into development turns a substantial part of the project’s uncertainty into verifiable data.
The impact on industrial decisions is direct and traceable. Every usage observation generates a requirement, every requirement translates into a design solution, and every solution is verified against the established acceptance criterion. This chain makes it possible to technically justify why a product has a given geometry, a given material or a given operating sequence. The projects featured in projects completed show how this way of working is applied in specific industrial cases, from initial diagnosis to implemented solution.
The economic optimization derived from these studies comes from two paths. The first is anticipation: correcting at the concept or prototype stage costs a fraction of what it costs to correct at the tooling or manufactured-unit stage. The second is properly sized design: knowing the real usage stresses avoids both over-engineering, which raises the cost of every unit produced, and insufficient validation, which shifts the cost to after-sales. The preventive approach applied in preventive failure analysis follows the same logic: identifying the critical condition before it manifests as an incident.
In regulated sectors, usage evidence forms part of the required technical documentation and shapes the product’s risk assessment. INFINITIA positions itself as a strategic technical partner at this stage, with a specialized team that interprets user-product interaction with engineering judgment and knowledge of the manufacturing processes involved. Recognition with the ASTER 2025 Digital Innovation Award, granted by ESIC Aragón, reflects this orientation toward analysis methods applied to real industrial problems. The goal of every study is the same: for the next technical decision to be made on evidence, not hypothesis.
