What is the FTIR spectrometer?

The FT-IR spectrometer is an advanced device used to identify and analyse chemicals by absorption of infrared radiation. It is noted for its ability to provide rapid and accurate analysis of a wide range of materials. Its operation is based on the Fourier transform, which allows converting data in the time domain to the frequency domain, thus facilitating the identification of the different molecular vibrations present in a sample.

How does FT-IR work?

Interpreting the results of an FTIR spectrum involves analysing the absorption peaks that appear in the spectrum. These peaks correspond to different molecular vibrations, each characteristic of specific bonds in the molecule.

  1. Peak identification: Each molecule has a unique pattern of infrared absorptions, known as a ‘fingerprint’. By comparing the spectrum obtained with databases of known spectra, the molecular composition of the sample can be identified.
  2. Peak intensity: The height or intensity of the peaks is related to the amount of the absorbing substance present. A higher peak indicates a higher concentration of that type of bond or functional group in the sample.
  3. Functional Group Analysis: Different regions of the infrared spectrum correspond to different types of vibrations (stretching, bending, etc.) and types of bonds (C-H, O-H, N-H, C=O, etc.). For example, stretching vibrations of OH groups are generally observed around 3200-3600 cm-¹.
  4. Comparison with Reference Spectra: By comparing the sample spectrum with reference spectra, specific compounds can be identified and the purity of the sample can be assessed.

Benefits of infrared spectrometry

One of the key benefits of the FT-IR spectrometer is its high measurement accuracy and speed of results. This makes it an indispensable tool in research laboratories, quality control, and forensic engineering cases, as it allows detailed analysis to be carried out in a matter of minutes, significantly reducing the time needed to make decisions based on the data obtained.
